About Write Turnz
Meet Jason M. Olson
Jason has been creating fine writing instruments for over a decade. When looking back into our family tree, it seems very fitting that creating Artisan Pens has morphed from a hobby into a full time family business. Our lineage is filled with engineers, designers, and artists. Those qualities have been passed down over time and those who have developed this natural ability, are very talented.
The skills I’ve aquired through my ancestors has carried me through every aspect of my career, until the politics of business became more important than our customers. It was at this time I found myself at a crossroads: continue working for someone else or return to my personal roots of small business. The choice was clear, and we have not looked back since then. We have developed a passionate hobby into a small family business.
Write Turnz Genealogy
One leaf on that tree of genealogy that inspires me, is my Great Grandfather Charles W. Ghent. He was an design engineer among other things, working on storied projects such as the Panama Canal, the first electrical power plant in Cuba, and the Niagara Power Generation Plant. His wife Josephine was also a hands on person. We are very blessed to have a small collection of her hand tools.
Another source of inspiration is my Aunt Kathy, who was a truly gifted artist. She first exposed me to the color wheel and drawing with perspective. As a young person mechanical know how seemed to come naturally and was further taught by
my Father. These “hands on” skills really made my people skills come to the forefront. No matter your age, you need customers to purchase what you can create or fix.
Jason, Sarah and Jayda Olson are avid Green Bay Packers fans.
Jayda is following in her father’s footsteps,
creating art of her own via Sweet Tea Studios.
Write Turnz Family Business
Today, I feel very blessed to be able to teach my daughter to use her hands, as she pursues her love of art. Jayda works in the Studio as her educational schedule permits. She also has her own projects that utilize many of our tools.
Also, being a “Founding Member” in the Pen Artisan Guild, we are able to teach and help others learn to create their own work. Being associated with the Guild has helped me learn new techniques more quickly by avoiding some of the mistakes along the way. As with any Guild, we get out exactly what we put in.
We truly believe that every Artisan Made pen that leaves our studio takes a small piece of us forward with it.
What Our Clients Say
Jason at Write Turnz has been excellent to work with on several occasions. He puts thought and detail into every part of his pens, and he has been very open to changing things when asked (nib size, adding a end cap, pen design, etc.). I have several pens from Jason and these will not be my last. I’d recommend Write Turnz to anyone that wants to get a one-of-a-kind pen made from unique materials.
Three of my favorite fountain pens come from Jason, Run for the Roses, (top in pict) a prototype made from fordite, (barrel and cap jewel) that became a corvette themed series (middle), and Vision of Space, the latest in my collection (bottom). The Derby pen features wood from the original spires at Churchill Downs, in my hometown, and the “Vision” pen features a bit of captan foil that traveled to the moon and back on Apollo 11 in 1969! That one gets a lot of ooh-ahh from friends. The pens are extremely well-crafted, artistic, and imminently functional. As you can see each pen bears features that blend into the theme and the materials are first rate. The creative process always involves the customers. Jason films parts of the process and shares these videos of creation and takes feedback online from us. Finally, these pens write beautifully with the beautiful nibs included (I love the 18Kt Jowo Stubs) and will serve you for generations! My daughter’s offspring will write with these and wonder at the history embedded within. You will not be disappointed.
Newly Crafted
Write Turnz; continually striving to create new and unique writing instruments.
Owl
Based on A.A. Milne’s stories set in the 100 Acre Wood, this pen is inspired by Owl and fittingly named. Using a once off casting with Owl’s main body colors and a piece of spalted Beech from the 100 Acre Wood in England, this pen turns heads with subtle beauty.
The hand engraved copper trim mimics an actual wing, while the finial rounds out the ensemble with an owl’s face. The copper will patina in time and have a wonderful glow that can be managed with oils from ones hand or a simple silver clothe. To coordinate with the copper trim, a rose gold nib was used in all the pens.
Project Musk Ox
Working with the Native Alaskan People we have been able to procure some of their excess Musk Ox horn. The horn has an amazing grain and texture, but is smooth as silk and never gets cold.
A variety of colors were made and each has a hand forged Damascus clip to make those colors really pop.
FrankenPen 4.0
What does the 4.0 in the name stand for? This is the fourth annual edition of the FrankenPen series. The 2022 pen went back to the roots of the design. How many different materials and textures can be combined in an interesting and pleasing form?
Let’s start with the furniture, nickel silver, titanium, mokume gene, stainless steel, sterling silver and copper. The balance is hand made blue jean micarta, in house resin, ceboplast and a Juma section.
Black Pen Society ’22
Our second year crafting the yearly pen for the Black Pen Society, we took a different direction, shapely and subtle. The cabochon’s are based on the years member only pin, featuring a black crow. The only real color is the copper furniture, which will patina over time, but can be brightened by oils in your hand or a simple silver clothe.
The shape of the body feels excellent in the hand, while the matte finish keeps the pen inline with the principles of the Black Pen Society, no color. This series utilized a rose gold plated steel nib.
