Carnival Ox V.2
Our “Carnival” resin contains many deep colors and a couple to make it all pop. Adding Musk Ox horn along with Damascus steel trim, adds incredible texture and depth. This pen truly highlights beauty natural beauty that can not be duplicated. However you look at Carnival Ox, the display of color is different, and interesting.
Empire Chill
With a simple approach using just black and white, Empire Chill does not leave the user wanting more. Deep texture in the Damascus steel, while the body transitions from black swirls to almost white. The hidden detail here is the clear pearl which reflex light at any angle.
Piggy
Based on A. A. Milne’s stories in the 100 Acre Wood, Piggy was an essential character. A special resin was required to make the pen, a basic pink background with slight streaks of bright pink was poured just for this pen. A curly cue tail inspired the clip design and of course the spalted Beech from the 100 Acre Wood in England.
PAG Contest ’22
The 2022 PAG Contest pen is rich with patterns and textures. The metal work was crafted from Damascus steel which is full of great lines. The body features dyed wooly mammoth molar fossil with more lines and appearance of texture, but is smooth to the touch. We poured a black resin with a bit of pearl to add more dimension to the entire pen. It also won the David Broadwell Best of Show Award at the Orlando Pen Show.
Owl
Based on A.A. Milne’s stories set in the 100 Acre Wood, this pen is inspired by Owl and fittingly named. Using a once off casting with Owl’s main body colors and a piece of spalted Beech from the 100 Acre Wood in England, this pen turns heads with subtle beauty.
The hand engraved copper trim mimics an actual wing, while the finial rounds out the ensemble with an owl’s face. The copper will patina in time and have a wonderful glow that can be managed with oils from ones hand or a simple silver clothe. To coordinate with the copper trim, a rose gold nib was used in all the pens.
Project Musk Ox
Working with the Native Alaskan People we have been able to procure some of their excess Musk Ox horn. The horn has an amazing grain and texture, but is smooth as silk and never gets cold.
A variety of colors were made and each has a hand forged Damascus clip to make those colors really pop.
FrankenPen 4.0
What does the 4.0 in the name stand for? This is the fourth annual edition of the FrankenPen series. The 2022 pen went back to the roots of the design. How many different materials and textures can be combined in an interesting and pleasing form?
Let’s start with the furniture, nickel silver, titanium, mokume gene, stainless steel, sterling silver and copper. The balance is hand made blue jean micarta, in house resin, ceboplast and a Juma section.
Black Pen Society ’22
Our second year crafting the yearly pen for the Black Pen Society, we took a different direction, shapely and subtle. The cabochon’s are based on the years member only pin, featuring a black crow. The only real color is the copper furniture, which will patina over time, but can be brightened by oils in your hand or a simple silver clothe.
The shape of the body feels excellent in the hand, while the matte finish keeps the pen inline with the principles of the Black Pen Society, no color. This series utilized a rose gold plated steel nib.
Hang 10
In our never ending quest to find different and unusual materials to craft fountain pens from, we found Surfite in Southern California. Surfite is resin that drips off surfboards as they are made and builds up on the floor, creating layers similar to Fordite.
Could there be a better material to craft a surfing theme pen from? We did not think so! The cap carries the colors one would see in a crashing wave, with a wave inspired clip. Pictured here is the prototype, the finished pens carry a cabochon with a Chaka engraved in it. Each pen is different, depending on how the layers flowed on the floor of the board shop.
The Tailor
The Linsey-Woolsey fabric used in the hand made micarta, is still made to the same specification today as it was in the era. I would describe this particular fabric as a blue and white striped broad cloth in cotton. Cast in the final is a hand sewn button that is period correct and used by re-enactors today. The metal work pays tribute to the tools of the trade a thimble and a sewing awl.
Abalone Shores
Abalone Shores started out as a resin casting experiment that went well. The hints and fading colors in the body draw the look from the inside of an abalone shell. The balance is our custom sparkle black resin and finished out with a Sterling Silver clip and cap ring.
The pen is classy and grabs the eye of those around you.
Honky Tonk
The request was to make a tribute pen to legendary Country & Western performers. The heart of the story is the hard maple which was removed from the stage floor at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. From there the rest just fell into place. As the “Man in Black” said, you will never see bright colors on my back. That statement drove the main resin used through out the pen.
And what self respecting performer back in the day did not wear turquoise? Thus in inlayed turquoise in the finial. A fret board inspired the hand engraving in on the clip. Lastly, there is not much more American than the Opry and country music, this drove the choice of colors in the grip section.
Paw
Paw Power captures the essence of one of the great educational institutions in the SouthEast United States. It features part of a retired bleacher board, in the body and that unmistakable dirty orange. The metal work carries the theme forward with an engraved paw, with stippling filling in the negative space. In time the copper will patina, giving it a wonderful glow, that is managed by the oils in ones hand.
This pen can be used as an eye dropper, cartridge or with an international converter.
Christopher
Based on A. A. Milne’s stories in the 100 Acre Wood, Christopher brings to life its character. He always wore the same yellow shirt and light blue shorts with a balloon in his hand. The body carries a wonderful piece of spalted Beech from the 100 Acre Wood in England, using nature’s beauty to our advantage. Not wanting to waste any, the small drops were turned round and used as a cabochon in the finial.
The section acts as a transition of the two colors while holding a rhodium plated gold nib.
Orlando Pen Show ’22
The Orlando Pen Show featured Purple Tolerance show ink. We went about mixing a custom resin to coordinate with the ink and put our spin on it. The clips are fashioned out of titanium.
Wanting to prominently capture the year, as 2022 was the inaugural year for the show, a special cabochon was designed and set into the finial. Each pen is unique unto itself with swirls of purple and soft white.
City of St. Louis
The short run LE series was created for the St. Louis Pen Show. Each pen comes with Statement of Ownership, which is numbered and tell the story of the pen, each pen is serialized with the matching number.
This years edition takes a look back at the early history of St. Louis and how the French influenced its development. The city of St. Louis was founded by the French in Spanish territory in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau.
The details of this pen, draw inspiration from the city and it surroundings.Blue and white to represent the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, while the fluer-de-lis represents the St. Louis of France, for which the city was named.
Spartan
The Spartan was a commission for a surprise present. Using classic Spartan
symbolism and specific colors, starts to create a special story.
Black walnut with a storied history was the finishing touch on this meaningful pen
capturing life experiences of the recipient.
The engraving is all done by hand under magnification.
And Gasp! It is a roller ball…..
DC Burning
During the War of 1812 the invading British troops set the White House ablaze on
August 24, 1814. The structure was gutted and unusable.
A massive reconstruction project was undertaken, and completed in 1817. The old
growth pine used in DC Burning was installed as flooring during the reconstruction project. This material is unlike anything known as pine today.
Custom poured resin captures black coals, slowly turning into orange and red flames.
While the clip is fashioned after a quill used at the time.
These pens deserved nothing short of 18k Gold nibs.
FrankenPen 3.0
The 3rd Annual edition of FrankenPen really packs a punch. Utilizing vintage cellulose acetate from the 1930’s and very straight lines.
The pen in essence has two faces, and keeping them aligned and straight was a
challenge that only patience could conquer. Lines in the metal work were engraved and
one side back filled with texture. This all takes place under high magnification and
completed manually.
Next challenge is to imagine the next rendition of this annual tradition.
East Meets West
This Pen Artisan Guild contest entry was inspired by great makers of the Japan, such as Hakase, but combined with American materials. Bog oak cap and lower finial, is the early stage of fossilization, creating the natural black color. Musk Ox horn which makes up the body comes to us from Alaska. The visual texture is unmatched, but is perfectly smooth to the touch. The final touch is the Sterling Silver clip and band, which was all formed by hand.
This pen is a true writer’s pen, weighing just over one ounce with a posting cap, it can comfortably be used all day long.
Spitfire
To actually hold history in your hand is an amazing experience, but to be able to
use history everyday, that is truly a special thing.
Spitfire uses artifacts from a 1943 Spitfire Supermarine XVI that crashed in the
Sand Gate Beach area of Kent, and was recovered by the Government in 1947.
The clip retains original paint, while the copper cap band was formed from a
high pressure oil line. The lower finial and body rings are also from the fuselage.
To top it off, the wood used in the body is from a 1943 Spitfire propeller, carefully
preserved and stabilized to last the next 75 years.
Gettysburg
How to respectfully design a pen around perhaps the darkest hours in American
history? That was the challenge.
The path chosen was to equally represent both sides in a subdued honorable
manner. Equal parts blue and grey resin i gets us started. The clip is fashioned
after the M1857 12 pound canon, which accounted for 40% of all artillery used.
Then adding in living history, the oak used on the body witnessed some of the
battles at Gettysburg.
Fossils V.3
Just finding fossilized walrus tusk is a challenge, and then to work with it a
further challenge.
The material here is scrap from Native Alaskan handy craft, they waste nothing.
Who does not love purple? Hand crafted furniture with Mokume Gane just
pushes this pen over the top. In time the patina will continue to enhance the
contest in the metals.
Celebration of Life
Being asked to design and craft a fountain to Celebrate a man’s life is very
serious and honorable task.
Everything is symbolism in this pen, from the base color of ebonite to the
choices of metal used. The body encapsulates pieces of ABS plastic from his
motorcycle. While the upper finial is a reminder of his practice of wearing bow
ties.
While the clip further emphasizes the motorcycle via a portion of the badge, and
the lower finial is symbolic of his interest in black smithing usable items.
Black Pen Society
Write Turnz was asked to create the 2021 edition for the Black Pen Society. The
Society truly cherishes the traditional black pen, devoid of garish colors and complicated hardware. We created two designs for the Black Pen Society, but
needed to push the envelope of tradition and add our touch.
The Standard truly showcases the custom cast material with a dash of sparkle added in. Each pen has a cabochon in the finial, clearly capturing the Black Pen Society and the year.
The Premium takes things up a notch, as we add in natural material, Irish Bog Oak.
Bog Oak gains its distinct character and colors from the earth surrounding it, while
starting the fossilization process. Additionally, the cap band adds another layer of distinction. These were fitted with 14k Gold nibs as well.
Art Deco
Copper Ox
Copper Ox is the very first pen to proudly display the Write Turnz log on the
finial, which is engraved by hand, here in our studio.
The combination of natural material, green which reminds me of copper with a
heavy patina, and actual copper, creates a striking contrast. The copper
trimmings will patina in time, but held in check by oils in your hand.
Texture in the Musk Ox horn is mesmerizing to the eye, with a slight tactile
response.
Rounding out the design is some light freeform engraving on the clip, which will
pop more once the natural patina starts to form.
Forest Park
The short run LE series was created around the “Show Only” ink for the 2021St. Louis
Pen Show, which is green. The story of the actual Forest Park seemed very
appropriate.
A quick teaser, think of a sunny warm mid-western day and being surrounded by wild
flowers….
Each clip was hand engraved with a design based on the plant branching as found in
nature. The colors, and spalted mango body have a very calming effect on the user. All
the pictures use different pens, as each has different spalting and color mixes in the
resin. The hope being seeing many different pens, will convey the overall feel.
GW-13
“GW-13” is the very embodiment of George Washington and the 13 Colony’s. The Cuttoe sword was Washington’s first American made sword in his collection.
What puts this piece over the top is George Washington actually planted the tree from which this pen is made.
Red Mammoth
Red Mammoth could be a mystical creature, but in reality the tusk in the body is fossilized Woolly Mammoth.
The deep red hues in the German Ebonite provide a great contrast with the earthy and caramel tones in the tusk.
The furniture is all hand forged American Damascus.
Route 66
“Route 66” captures a by-gone era of when America discovered the open road.
The length of Route 66 was dotted with tourist attractions, Mom & Pop shops, and plenty of signs with neon.
These pens have been crafted with Ranchite, which was collected at the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo.
The Big Arrow points the way……
Velvet Lyre
“Velvet Lyre” is a bold statement about the love of classical music and earning a degree in such.
Classic Chittum Burl design with deep red velvet and deep purple, much like fabrics one would find in an opera house.
The clip is a stylized music note and the engraved lyre on the finial.
The final touch is the music nib.
The Pearl
The Pearl captures the spirit of everyone’s favorite Pirate and his ship. The handmade furniture has been plated in black rhodium to keep with the theme.
The wood used in the bodies is from the tall ship Bounty, originally built for the motion picture “Mutiny on the Bounty” released in 1962. She also appears in the POC movie.
Carnival Ox
Red Ox
Pink Note
Pink Note carries a musical theme, but in a minimalistic character. This was paired with “Velvet Lyre” and was crafted as a Graduation gift.
The soft pink is infused with playful pearl that really dance in the light. The touch of bling is in the handmade furniture to mimic a musical note and rose gold plating and matching 18k nib in rose gold.
Ancient Chompers
“Ancient Chompers” is truly functional art containing a fossilized artifact.
The heart of this pen is fossilized Woolly Mammoth molar, that has been preserved.
Carrying the Mammoth theme forward the hand made clip had a raised tusk shape plated in gold.
The Sands in Clubs
The next evolution of “The Sands” in Clubs features original stage floor from the Copa Room. The iconic acts that crossed the stage are numerous.
The clip is crafted from 1950’s original silverware used in the resort, while maintaining the name sake.
To add to the theme, the Club shape has been plated in 18k Gold. Nothing like silver and gold goes with gambling.
A one off custom resin was created in black with very strong red undertones.
Purple Ox
Simply stunning is a short phrase to describe the Purple Ox. The body features
Musk Ox horn with incredible figure and creamy texture. Have you ever seen a
one of these beasts? They are found roaming Southeast Alaska, and must have
been the inspiration for some the alien beasts in popular sci-fi movies.
Hand poured custom purple resin that is very deep with a figure that moves in the
light. The dark damascus is a striking contrast to the rest of the pen.
Fitted with a Jowo #6, polished steel nib, and international converter, Purple Ox
is ready to make a statement or write your memoirs with.
As with all our creations, Purple Ox is eye dropper compatible and
cartridge/converter ready.
Rabbit
Rabbit was created with a fun and whimsical style to evoke fond memories of
ones childhood. Perhaps toys, Saturday morning cartoons, or family events.
Hand poured resins, combined with a custom, sculpted, bronze “carrot” clip really
complete the story. The texture was added via a process called stippling, 1000’s
of tiny little dots under magnification.
How does it write? Fabulous question! Rabbit features a #6 nib in 18K gold, with
a Medium point. These really put ink on the paper and feel incredible in the
hand. It is eye dropper compatible or cartridge/converter. A standard
international Schmidt converter is included.
Mocha Mammoth
Just to hold this ancient fossilized Woolly Mammoth tusk is an experience. The tusk has been carefully preserved and used to create this Limited Edition series called “Mocha Mammoth”.
Paired with premium German ebonite, these pens will last more than a lifetime.
All the trimmings were hand made with damascus to add the correct amount of contrast.
Lest we forget the large #8 gold nib!
Ancient Chompers V.2
Imagine feeling the natural texture of fossilized Woolly Mammoth tusk, then enjoying that tactile response everyday.
The Woolly Mammoth theme is carried onto the clip with a raised relief of a tusk, which has been plated with black rhodium.
Fossils V.2
The fact that this fossilized material exists is amazing on its own. Carefully collected fossilized walrus, preserved and cast into usable turning material has been used to create these stunning pens.
A one off custom resin, hand crafted trimmings in a Japanese metal form called, Mokume Gane just gets better with age.
As an added touch, premium ebonite was used to house the huge #8 gold nibs.
Mammoth Surprise
To push one’s limits, you have to try new things. Mammoth Surprise uses fossilized Woolly Mammoth tusk, but cut across the grain. A new technique.
Much to our surprise everything worked out and the hand made Mokume Gane furniture add another level of texture and function.
Queen Terie V.2
This commissioned pen was all about the material in the beginning. But, it had to have some meaning.
For a long time friend, I reflected on what I knew about her, and the choices became obvious.
The finial carries the Native American symbol for Mother and the English table leg clip is a long story!
Deconstructed V.1
The deconstructed style has been formed in my minds eye for over a year. This is the very first piece made in this style. Featuring the ever rare, Chittum Burl and handmade bronze trimmings.
Deconstructed V.1 is a real head turner and a pleasure to use. The live edge of the burl being exposed is so organic and simply amazing to admire. Although having burl on the exterior of the body, it is fully capable of being used as an eye dropper.
Deconstructed V.2
The deconstructed style has been formed in my minds eye for over a year. This is the very first piece made in this style. Featuring the ever rare, Red Mallee and handmade nickel silver trimmings.
Deconstructed V.2 is a real head turner and a pleasure to use. The live edge of the burl being exposed is so organic and simply amazing to admire. Although having burl on the exterior of the body, it is fully capable of being used as an eye dropper.
Larimar Seas
This piece was inspired by my travels in the Caribbean and reflecting on the tranquil waters. Whilst taking in the local culture and relaxed pace of life. Did I mention shopping for Larimar? Larimar a local gem stone is similar to turquoise, but so very different at the same time. The body of this pen is made with slurry or dust from cutting Larimar and adds a little weight to the body. To not interrupt the day dream, brushed titanium was used in crafting the clip.
The Man in Black
The Man in Black is loaded with symbolism surrounding the legendary Johnny Cash and his life’s work.
The oak body was reclaimed from Folsom Prison, out of the psych ward.
Trim work is minimal and crafted out of stainless steel, no need for anything too fancy.
The Spruce Goose
Howard Hughes and Hughes Aviation set out to build the largest and most powerful transport plane the world had seen.
However, do to Mr. Hughes need for perfection, the war had come to a close before the aircraft was complete.
The H-4 Hercules did take flight in 1947 proving the pundits wrong, that the plane could fly.
Our pen in the very embodiment of that can do attitude and was designed around laminated birch that was part of that famous flight.
Doubtful Donkey
This design is meant to capture a down trodden attitude, while the sky is falling.
Yes, everyone’s favorite donkey. The design is short, stocky, and personalized.
And who could forget, the nail in the tail?
The Sands in Diamonds
Imagine some of the Greats that crossed the stage at the Copa Room, it is a long list of distinguished performers.
This pen belongs in Las Vegas as the body is constructed of hard maple, that was once part of the stage flooring in the Copa Room.
And that silver clip? Vintage 1950’s original silverware from The Sands Casino. The embossed diamond finial really belongs here.
Doghouse
Capturing his passion of making fine cutlery and living through Hurricane Irma, The Doghouse pen was born.

What Our Clients Say
I met Jason via a collaboration on a pen I was having made with another Maker. Since that time I have developed a great liking to Jason’s work, from natural materials to industrial by-products, he can make it work. My collection includes, Fordite and Woolly Mammoth. Jason stands behind his work and is open to input or concerns I have had over the years, and is active in the pen community as a whole.
This pen was made so beautifully. The handwork with the wood was smooth, and elegant. The imprint on the top of the pen I asked for was rustic and very well done. I highly recommend Mr. Olson to anyone looking for a classy pen design as he will work with your ideas to create a nice piece of work.
